Located in Boulder Colorado, Four Direction Batik has dedicated itself to weaving the ancient art of batik through modern techniques to produce one of a kind wearable art. We chose the name for the company based on the way in which we interpret the art form of Batik.
We at Four Direction Batik embody many different techniques from all of the eight directions, such as
Indian,
Indonesian
and
West-African to name a few. Thus the
name to pay homage to all cultures that continue to inspire us. The art form of
Batik
by definition involves the application of fluid or semi-fluid substances which
solidify on fabric so as to render it impenetrable to a colored dye bath. Hot
wax, resin, and paraffin wax, as well as starch, rice paste, bean paste, and
even half-fluid mud are used as resist materials. The method in which we work
is using that of resist mixture of Paraffin wax and bees wax and applying it to
fabric, mainly T-shirts and tapestries. Batik is an art form that holds many
cultural visions. It is practiced in
Ukraine,
India,
China, South-East Asia, Turkistan,
and
West Africa. However in Indonesia on
the island of
Java the craft has
been brought to heightened levels of refinement.
We at Four Direction Batik believe in the power of unity and diversity. To pay homage to that philosophy we created “Batiks for a Cause” to contribute where it is needed.
